Tuong, also called hat boi in the South, is a form of stage performance that originated during the Ly-Tran Dynasty and became very popular nation-wide during the following centuries. During the Nguyen Dynasty in the 19th century, tuong occupied a considerable position in the cultural lives of the royalty.

In tuong, space and time are captured in song, dance, and simple music. In the past, tuong did not require a lot of stage accessories. Now, however, backdrops and make-up have become more elaborate and sophisticated.
