Bach Dang Festival

9th day of the 4th lunar month

The Bach Dang River has been etched into the memories of the local people as the site where several national heroes fough against foreign invaders. These national heroes included Le Hoan (981), Ngo Quyen, who planted sharp wooden stakes into the riverbed to defeat a Chinese invasion force (938), as well as Tran Hung Dao and other famous generals of the Tran Dynasty (1288) who repeated the same strategy.

The ceremonies also involve the usual incense burning and offerings. The people of the village stage a procession along the banks of the river. There is also a boat race where bamboo leaf-shaped kayaks glide across the surface of the water while shouting spectators celebrate the victories of days gone by. Other entertainment includes wrestling, human chess-playing and cock-fighting.
